My name is Cindy Hutchinson, I was born in Mobile Al and moved to Fort Walton Beach when the Air Force base closed. I lived there till I got married. I married my high school sweetheart (Dennis). We were married for a few years and became Christians. He was working for a beer distributor and we felt that just wasn't the job the Lord had in mind. We both felt the Lord was calling him to go to a Christian College. We prayed about it and moved to St. Augustine, Florida where he went to Trinity Baptist College in Jacksonville and where I was a stay at home mom. I really loved being at home with my girls. I was a stay at home mom for twenty years; I guess I really did love it!

When Dennis was in college he learned to airbrush, we did shows and festivals. I took some of my crafts, dolls, bread dough and panty hose magnets. I can’t remember ever not doing some type of crafts throughout my life. My dad always said I had “tinkeridas”- I was always tinkering on something.

One year we came up to the Smoky Mountains to airbrush for the summer. We lived on Kyle Carvers Apple Orchard and fell in love with the mountains. When he graduated we prayed about where to move and we both felt like the Lord said to move to the mountains. It was the best thing we ever did. It was great- when we moved here there was sooooo many crafter's- and I loved it. I would take the girls to Gatlinburg just to see all the crafts- pretty must weekly. They eventually got tired of if, but I never did. I guess whenever you're a crafter or any kind of artist it just gets to be a part of you as time goes by. You just can’t get enough!

When my youngest daughter (Jody) was in high school I found this little shop called “The Pine Cone Gift Shoppe”. I fell in love with it. It had all kinds of gifts but it also had the small section of craft patterns. Well, needless to say I started buying a few patterns here and there. Eventually I think I had more patterns than they did. I enjoyed making dolls so much it got a little out of control. I displayed some of my work in a couple of craft malls and in Knoxville. They did well enough to keep my habit up. Eventually, after being there so much- I got to know the owner of the shop very well. I told her when she was ready to sell- let me know. Now remember I had not worked outside of the house for over 20 years. One day she called and said she was ready, I didn't know what to do. I wanted it soooo badly. For those of you that know me know how excited I can get over crafts and the possibility of owning my own shop. I had wanted my own store for years- but the timing just hadn't been right. But now everything just fell in place. Within a few months I had a gift shop (Pine Cone Gift Shoppe), a job- not part time but full time after 20 years.

I kept the name for a few years. I knew I wanted a craft shop more than a gift shop but this one had a great name, customers, and location. The more I got to know my customers the more I wanted a craft shop. About 4 years ago I changed from the gift shop to ALL patterns. Two years ago I changed the name from “Pine Cone Gift Shoppe” to “The Pattern Hutch”. We now have over 3500 different patterns in the shop with about 500 samples made from wood, cloth dolls, applique sweatshirts and stitchery.

One of my favorite things about my shop is the people that come into see us. Everyone that comes into my shop has something in common with me and I love it. I do wood working, doll-making, and some applique. But I can talk to anyone that is buying a pattern and get just as excited as if I were going to be doing the project myself! My husband tells me that I am the only person he knows that loves to go to work. I do. I love my shop and the work I do. I just want to thank everyone out there that makes it possible!    Cindy, (Hutch)
